Kathryn Schmid
Kathryn Schmid is a Silver City resident who enjoys the warm diverse community of people and vast wilderness with its hiking trails and camping opportunities. She finds inspiration in nature. She has lived in many states including Hawaii, Michigan, Colorado and Califonia, as well as camping in Baja, Mexico, which is reflected in some of her paintings.
Kathryn has been involved in art since childhood. She majored in fine art at Michigan State University and has studied various art forms over the years mostly focusing on painting. She was an artist in Residence at Mendocino Art Center, California and spent time at Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California. After retiring from nursing, Kathryn has attended several painting and drawing classes at WNMU in Silver City.
Kathryn considers her style Impressionistic Realism. She tries to capture the dramatic essence of a scene or subject and the balance between her reaction to it and the realistic view. She loves to experiment with shape, color, and patterns. Kathryn works in all media, watercolor, oil and acrylic. She enjoys allowing the process to unfold in a natural way, and often follows the painting rather than trying to lead it. Her work is an ongoing collection of changing style and focus that spans many years.
She currently has some of her paintings at RA@W Gallery in Silver City.
